Effects of Proposition 13
Your editorial (“Disaster in Success, “ June 26) on Proposition 13 was intellectually correct but not attuned to the taxpayers of this great state. I agree that our tax structure should be revamped to avoid reductions in libraries, and police and fire services but it will never happen.
Every time we see our Board of Supervisors in chauffeured limousines, working out of offices more luxurious than U.S. senators and served by a staff that a shah would be envious of, the thought of additional taxes become repugnant.
Our police department believes that a captain in the hand is worth two officers in the field at budget time; while patrol officers drive overworked and undermaintained radio cars, our deputy chiefs never want for well-maintained low-mileage vehicles.
Any provision to provide additional taxes to our elected officials would result in only more bureaucracy with the truly needy, as usual, being the only losers along with the taxpayers.
