In a lavish event that Canadians are dubbing their “royal wedding,” National Hockey League star Wayne Gretzky of the Stanley Cup champion Edmonton Oilers will marry actress Janet Jones today near Gretzky’s home in Edmonton.

“We want it to be as first-class as possible, but it’s not a million-dollar wedding like everyone says. We’re from sensible families,” said Gretzky, who has won the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player in 8 of his 10 seasons.

Jones, 27, has appeared in the movies “American Anthem,” “The Flamingo Kid,” “A Chorus Line,” and “Police Academy 5.”

Media requests for the wedding were so great that only pool coverage will be allowed. “This is not a sports event,” Gretzky said. “Some things should be between families and friends.”
