Local News in Brief : Irvine : Ground Is Broken for Car-Pool-Lane Project
- Share via
With dozens of legislators and corporate executives looking on, Caltrans officials broke ground Monday to mark the beginning of the second phase of the San Diego Freeway widening project.
When the work is completed, 24 miles of car-pool lanes will be provided on the freeway.
The second phase of the widening effort will add a car-pool lane in each direction between the Corona del Mar Freeway in Costa Mesa and the area near the convergence of the Santa Ana and San Diego freeways in Irvine. The first phase of the widening project, begun last summer, will add one car-pool lane in each direction between the Corona del Mar and the San Gabriel River freeways.
In both phases, the new lanes are located in the center dividers and will accommodate buses, vans and car pools.
