Local News in Brief : 6-Year-Old Boy Found Floating in Lake Dies

A 6-year-old boy died shortly after he was found floating in Castaic Lake on Monday, authorities said.

The boy, who was not immediately identified, was taken by a rescue helicopter to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia after he was found in the lake about 7 p.m., said Capt. Duane Deever of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. He died an hour later, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Deever said the accident occurred in a remote area on the northwest side of the lake, where the boy and his parents had been camping. He said a boater spotted the boy floating in the lake and called lifeguards.

It appeared the boy had been under water about 10 minutes, Deever said. The drowning is still under investigation, he said.
