‘CBS Evening News,’ PBS Top ’87 Emmy List

“CBS Evening News With Dan Rather” was the most-nominated show and PBS the most-named network when the National Television Academy announced this year’s news Emmy nominees.

The awards for outstanding news and documentary coverage will be presented at a black-tie dinner of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in New York on Sept. 8.

PBS shows drew 37 Emmy nominations, while CBS was second with 34, ABC third with 28 and NBC had seven. Syndicated shows got seven nominations, TBS had three and pool coverage and WNET/New York, a PBS station, had one each.

Among the individual shows, “CBS Evening News With Dan Rather” headed the list, earning 15 nominations, while ABC’s “20/20” news magazine had 12 and PBS’ “Eye on the Prize” had seven.

Also with multiple nominations were “Nightline” (ABC) and “60 Minutes” (CBS), each with six; and “World News Tonight With Peter Jennings” (ABC), “Frontline” (PBS) and “America Today” (PBS), each with five. “CBS Reports” and the “MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour” (PBS) each had four nominations.

Those with three nominations included “Moyers: God and Country” (PBS), “CBS News on Sunday Morning,” “NBC Nightly News With Tom Brokaw,” “Lions in the African Night” (PBS), “Christian Science Monitor Reports” (syndicated) and “National Geographic Explorers” (TBS).

The national news and documentary Emmy Awards cover programs aired during the calendar year 1987.
