State Group Honors 2 Yorba Linda PTAs for ‘Outstanding Service to Youth’

The PTAs of Travis Ranch Elementary School and Bernardo Yorba Junior High School, both in Yorba Linda, were named two of the “Nine Outstanding Units” by the California State PTA organization.

“We at the Placentia Unified District are extremely honored and delighted that two schools from our council--and neighboring ones at that--were chosen for this award,” said Marsha McNamara, president of the Bernardo Yorba Junior High Parent Teacher Assn.

Colleen Hayashi is president of the Travis Ranch PTA. The awards for “Outstanding Service to Children and Youth,” along with a Certificate of Recognition, were presented to the two PTA presidents at the state PTA convention in San Francisco.

A 72-foot-long, 5-foot-high mural titled “Animals of the World” has been completed on an exterior wall at Fremont Elementary School in Santa Ana. Manuel Hernandez of Santa Ana, who teaches math and English as a second language, drew the outline of the mural that shows an elephant, zebra, giraffe, lion, panda bear, tiger and several monkeys and birds. He was helped by 200 student artists.

Joyce Hanson, a member and former president of the Tustin school board, has been named Woman of the Year by the city of Tustin. In addition to her work for the Tustin Unified School District, Hanson is an active worker for other community organizations. She also recently was named president-elect of the Orange County School Boards Assn.

An educational film on AIDS entitled “A Letter From Brian” won a first-place award for Jim Ryerson Productions of Newport Beach in the audio-visual category from the Orange County chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The award was accepted by Lisa Campbell of El Toro, the film’s associate producer, at the society’s annual awards dinner.

The Orange County Council of the Navy League of the United States, a civilian support group for the sea services, has elected William F. Cote, a Newport Beach real estate broker, as president.

The county group, with 1,000 members, is one of the largest councils in the United States and offers services to the Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine, and also helps sponsor an air show to benefit Navy Relief.

Cote said he intends to broaden many of the league’s services and to institute new programs, including a speakers bureau.

A 60-second television spot created for the 1987 Orange County Fair won the Clarion Award for Santa Ana-based Jill Lloyd & Associates, a public relations and advertising firm. The award for the nationwide competition was sponsored by Women in Communications Inc. of Austin, Tex.

The firm also promotes the Orange County Racing Fair at Los Alamitos Race Course in Cypress and the Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach.

Photographer Dennis G. Tom of Orange was awarded the Photographic Craftsman Degree by Professional Photographers of America during its annual international convention in Orlando, Fla. The degree is given through a point system earned by presenting lectures and teaching.

The association establishes standards of professional performance for its more than 16,000 individual members and 215 international affiliate organizations.

Dr. Adrienne Scheibner, who pioneered laser techniques to treat skin abnormalities, has become a member of the UC Irvine Beckman Laser Institute and the college’s department of surgery.

She will continue to conduct research to develop laser therapy and will train UC Irvine physicians in her techniques. She will also treat patients in the institute’s laser clinic.

Al McCord, Anaheim’s manager of economic development, has been appointed a director of the American Economic Development Council, a national organization committed to helping communities keep and attract businesses through educational programs, published information and legislative advocacy.
