Don’t Ever Expect Soccer to Make It Big in America
- Share via
Regarding Frank Murphy’s narrow-sighted letter (July 16) denouncing the world’s most popular sport (soccer), it seems to me that the world is like a military unit, but only the United States is marching out of step.
No matter how much effort goes into trying to make soccer a major sport in the United States, it will never happen because there is simply too much of a cultural difference between the United States and Europe and South America, which will not allow the game to ever become popular in this country. Timeouts, two-minute warnings and enough statistics to fill an accountant’s ledger are just not part of the game.
