A San Marcos teen-ager and a Los Angeles man were killed Sunday morning when the car in which they were riding ran off California 78 and overturned.

The driver of the car, a 17-year-old San Marcos resident, apparently fell asleep at the wheel as the car traveled east on the freeway, said a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman. The car went off the road about a half mile east of El Camino Real in Oceanside, rolled over and landed on its top, the spokeswoman said.

Norma Martinez Guitierrez, 15, a student at San Pasqual Junior High School, and David Flores Alaniz, 21, of Los Angeles were dead at the scene, a coroner’s spokesman said.

The driver, Enrique Mosqueda, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Sunday afternoon. He will be held on suspicion of manslaughter, a CHP spokeswoman said.

The other three passengers were also hospitalized. Remigio Verdin, 18, of Los Angeles was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital with a broken back and was listed in “guarded” condition. He is expected to survive, said a hospital nursing supervisor.

Rebecca Alvarado, 18, of Vista and Jose Ricardo, 20, of Gardena, were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where they were treated and released.
