Members of the Broadcasters’ Annual Baseball Elections Committee have decided something that Dodgers fans have believed for a long time: Vin Scully is the best play-by-play man in the business. In results published in this week’s edition of TV Guide, the committee--composed of baseball broadcasters--announced that Scully and WWOR-TV color man (and former St. Louis Cardinal) Tim McCarver were the best in their respective fields. The worst, according to the committee? Al Michaels, McCarver’s play-by-play colleague at ABC, and ABC color man (and ex-Baltimore Oriole) Jim Palmer. Respondents to the committee’s survey were asked to grade each announcer in six categories on a scale of 1 to 5. As a team, NBC’s Bob Costas (play-by-play) and Tony Kubek (analysis) fared better than Scully and his NBC partner, Joe Garagiola.
