Seven hospitals in the San Francisco area and the union representing 1,700 licensed vocational nurses and other hospital employees braced for a strike after months of talks on a number of issues broke down over the weekend. Unless negotiations resume, the nurses, housekeepers and laundry workers will walk off the job and set up picket lines, a union spokesman said. “We’re in touch with the mediator,” said Joe Twarog, chief negotiator for Local 250 of the Hospital and Institutional Workers Union. “We’re open to meeting any time. But, short of that happening, we’re prepared for a strike.” The hospitals--six in San Francisco and one in Daly City--also were preparing for a walkout.
