RIO DE JANEIRO — Angry traffic meter attendants here have caused chaos by issuing more than 300,000 incorrect parking tickets in an attempt to disrupt the city’s traffic department.
The 300,000 parking tickets have been sent to car owners, groups of whom protested on Monday outside the traffic department. Over a million more incorrect tickets were intercepted before being sent out. Meter attendants also issued multiple tickets for one car at the same time.
The traffic department chief, Jose Alves de Brito, told journalists the disruption was aimed at halting an anti-corruption drive in the organization. He said those guilty of disruption will be fired.
