HIGH LIFE : Mater Dei Choirs Perform at World Expo in Brisbane

Mater Dei High School’s Show Choir and Hand Bell Choir recently returned from performing at the 1988 World Expo in Brisbane, Australia.

The Hand Bell Choir’s 13 members and the Show Choir’s 84 singers and dancers, directed by Thomas Hodgeman and Gail Milby, all performed. Mater Dei sent a videocassette and audio resume to the World Projects Tour Co. 2 1/2 years ago. The school was selected as one of 16 schools from the United States and Canada to perform. The Mater Dei choirs sang at the Expo in Brisbane as well as at St. Joseph’s College, a private boys’ high school.

The Show Choir’s program consisted of 30-minute shows highlighting such U.S. musical genres as vaudeville, the Roaring ‘20s, big band, Broadway and the silver screen. The Hand Bell Choir performed songs from Japan, Austria, Hungary, Germany, Australia and the United States.

High Life, which has appeared on Saturdays, will move to Fridays beginning with the Aug. 5 issue.
