Marine Dies During 3-Mile Run Portion of Fitness Test

A 24-year-old Marine collapsed and died Wednesday during a 3-mile run that was part of a physical fitness test at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, a spokeswoman said.

The victim, whose name was being withheld pending notification of his family, was pronounced dead at 7:50 a.m. at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he had been taken by helicopter.

An investigation to determine the cause of death was begun by the Marine Corps, a spokeswoman said.

It was the second Marine death in three months to occur during or after the fitness test at the El Toro air station, Marine Sgt. Deborah Bragagnini said Wednesday.

On May 11, Marine Sgt. Joseph Serna died of a massive heart attack after completing the 3-mile run, according to the autopsy report.
