Local News in Brief : Cityhood Effort Delayed

Share

Objections by six residents to proposed boundaries for a city of Diamond Bar have killed any chance of qualifying an incorporation measure for the November ballot.

The six residents wrote a letter to the Local Agency Formation Commission, asking the commission to reconsider its approval of Diamond Bar’s cityhood application. They opposed inclusion in the proposed city limits of a 600-acre residential section between Diamond Bar and Rowland Heights called “no-man’s land” by area residents.

Because LAFCO will have to consider the objections, the measure cannot be put on the ballot by the Aug. 11 deadline, officials said.

The residents, none of whom live in the disputed area, said they are opposed “for various reasons,” but would not specify what they were.

The county Board of Supervisors was expected to act next Tuesday to place the matter on the ballot, but the letter will delay the action until Aug. 29 at the earliest, officials said.

Cityhood backers angrily questioned the residents’ motives. “It’s nothing more than a political ploy, that’s all it is,” said Gary Werner, chairman of the Incorporation ’88 Committee.
