Two Pacific Palisades residents, Pat Hines and Gerry A. Rodrigues, will compete in the 7th annual Manhattan Island Marathon Swim on Aug. 27 in New York City.

Hines was an All-American back-stroker at the University of Miami in the mid-1970s and is a veteran marathon swimmer, bicyclist and triathlete. She will be trying for her second victory in the women’s division in the swim of more than 27 miles around Manhattan Island. In 1986, she took first place among women and finished third overall.

Rodrigues, 25, a former Pepperdine University swimmer born in Trinidad, will be in his first Manhattan Island swim. A triathlete and ocean swimmer, he won swimming races in 1987 at the Malibu and Ventura piers.

William Ferrell, 79, used a seven iron to ace the 136-yard, par-3 third hole at Penmar Golf Course. Other golfers who had recent holes in one at Los Angeles Municipal golf courses included J. C. Benedict of Culver City and Andrew McCluskey of Santa Monica, both at Penmar, and Evelyn Bartley, Hiroshi Mimura and Joel Fischer, all of West Los Angeles; LeRoy Mosley and Norman King, both of Los Angeles, and Mary Blair of Santa Monica, all at the Rancho Park 9-hole course.

Pat Sullivan shot a 34 to win the A flight at the Penmar Men’s Golf Club July tournament. Other flight winners and their gross scores were Chuck Trowbridge, B, 34; Art Durschlag, C, 38; Roman Colbert, D, 42, and Steve Matulin, temporary handicaps, 38.
