Lora Faces Penalty as Sugar Found in Bottles

Miguel Lora of Colombia, the World Boxing Council bantamweight champion, faced possible suspension Thursday after the State Athletic Commission concluded that he had ingested sugar during the successful defense of his crown.

Two bottles were taken from Lora’s corner Monday night when he fought Albert Davila at the Forum. The liquid, which commission member Marty Denkin said had a “sweet taste,” was examined in a Los Angeles laboratory.

Athletic inspector Carlos Lopez said the lab found sucrose in the liquid.

Lopez said Lora and his representatives will be asked to attend an Aug. 19 commission meeting in San Diego and that Lora could be fined, suspended, reprimanded or all three.

Lora, who has made seven successful defenses of the title he won from Daniel Zaragoza in 1985, scored an easy 12-round decision in the bout, which was also marred by an incident in the ninth round when a spectator threw a white towel into the ring.

“WBC rules prohibit any boxer from drinking anything but plain water between rounds,” Denkin said.
