A small blood clot was found in a main artery of Boston Red Sox pitcher Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd’s right arm.

The clot, more than a half-inch long, was discovered below the right shoulder after two days of tests conducted by team physician Dr. Arthur Pappas.

Pappas said the clot is recent since Boyd pitched without problems until a week ago.

In an effort to dissolve the clot, doctors began treatment with an enzyme, urokinase.

Boyd was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 27, after being forced to leave a game in Texas in the fourth inning.
