Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, is resigning from three exclusive clubs, his spokesman said Friday. At least two of the clubs do not have black members, but officials of all three said none exclude membership to any group of people.

Bentsen, Texas’ senior senator, “just felt it was the appropriate thing to do,” said his spokesman, Jack DeVore.

The letters of resignation have been mailed to the River Oaks Country Club and the Ramada Club in Houston and the Middleburg Tennis Club in Middleburg, Va., DeVore said.

Ramada Club manager John Divernois said George Bush was a member of the private business luncheon club, founded in 1939, until shortly before becoming vice president.
