Reported AIDS cases throughout the world rose by 7,766, or 7.7%, in July to reach 108,176 by the end of the month, the World Health Organization said Friday.

It said the United States accounted for about half of the new cases in July and has had a total of 69,085 reported cases, 64% of the known world total.

One or more cases were reported in July by 140 contries, the U.N. health agency said.

WHO began keeping records on acquired immune deficiency syndrome in 1979. Its case figures represent the cumulative total of reported cases since that year, with more than half the cases having resulted in deaths.

WHO officials added that at most, only half of the AIDS victims worldwide have been identified.
