Costa Mesa : Circuit Blows, Causing 33-Minute Power Outage

Share

A faulty circuit near the Southern California Edison Co. substation at Main Street and the Costa Mesa Freeway caused a 33-minute power outage late Sunday afternoon for about 3,100 customers, including the control tower at John Wayne Airport and the Orange County Performing Arts Center.

Neither location reported any problems, however. The control tower continued operating on emergency generators, and neither passenger terminals nor flights were affected. The arts center was virtually empty by the time of the outage, having completed a ballet performance about 15 minutes earlier.

The power failure mainly affected the industrial and commercial Red Hill area of Costa Mesa, an Edison spokesman said. Some customers in Santa Ana and Irvine were affected as well.

All power was restored by 5:34 p.m., the spokesman said.

The cause of the power failure was not immediately determined.
