Titans’ Football Starts Today for New Players

Cal State Fullerton, which begins its season Sept. 3 against Southwestern Louisiana, opens football training camp today.

Titan Coach Gene Murphy is expecting about 22 new players to report. They will begin working out Tuesday.

Returning players--including newcomers who took part in spring practice--report Friday, and will join the workouts Saturday.

Among the newcomers whom Murphy expects to contribute significantly this season are John Bavaro, a defensive lineman from Glendale College, and Mike Pringle, a running back who transferred from Washington State.

Fullerton has relied increasingly on community college transfers in recent years, and that has made the newcomers’ reporting date more crucial. Because many of those players complete the work for their community college degrees during the summer, it is often uncertain who will be with the team until reporting day.

“We have to wait to see who shows up to know what we’ve got,” Murphy said.

Fullerton had a 6-6 record last season, and will be seeking its first winning season in three years. The Titans were 3-9 in 1986.
