Toshiwo Doko; Former President of Toshiba Corp.

Toshiwo Doko, 91, who helped revitalize Japanese manufacturing firms after the war. Doko served as president of Toshiba Corp., the electronics giant, and oversaw the placing of Japan’s railways in private hands. Doko joined the Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipyard, later renamed Ishikawajima Heavy Industries Co., after his graduation from the Tokyo Higher Technical School. He became president of Ishikawajima Heavy Industries in 1950 and helped rescue the firm from a recession. In 1964, Doko became chairman of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., a major heavy machinery maker, and was named president of Toshiba the following year. From 1974 to 1980, Doko served as chairman of the powerful Federation of Economic Organizations, Keidanren, which involves about 1,000 major Japanese companies. Doko was chairman of the Prime Minister’s Advisory Council on Administrative Reform in 1983 when the group recommended the division of the state-run Japan National Railways into several private companies.
