Local News in Brief : South County : Drive to Oust Porter From Water Board Fails

Share

A drive to recall well-known south county resident Sam Porter from the Santa Ana Mountains County Water District has failed, the county registrar of voters said Tuesday.

Registrar Donald F. Talley said that Charles Wall, vice-president of the water district, had submitted 509 petition signatures to place to a recall measure on the ballot, but that only 370 of the signers were registered voters. At least 469 valid signatures, representing 25% of the water district’s registered voters, were required.

Wall could not be reached for comment. Neither could Porter, who had been accused of illegally hooking up water lines at his 280-acre ranch in Trabuco Canyon and of improper behavior at water district board meetings. Porter has denied the allegations of illegal water hookups.

Porter tried unsuccessfully to unseat county Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez in an election earlier this year.

The district serves about 1,500 residents and businesses.
