Share

George Hanna, a longtime City Council critic, became the first official candidate for mayor when he filed nominating petitions with the city clerk Tuesday.

Hanna, a 59-year-old general contractor, is treasurer of SAMSON (Santa Ana Merged Society of Neighbors), a residents group that has criticized the council majority and has sponsored two ballot initiatives to change the city’s at-large electoral system.

Others who have taken out nomination papers or who have said they are considering running for mayor include incumbent Dan Young, Councilman John Acosta, former mayor Gordon Bricken and former school board trustee Sadie Reid-Benham. Candidates have until Friday afternoon to return their papers.

November’s mayoral race will be the first in the city’s 102-year history. Previously, the City Council chose one of its members for the post.
