Just for Starters, She Needs an Initial Assist

Share

Janice Bolitho of Whittier is looking for someone locally who can engrave initials on an old sterling-silver service and can also replace some stainless-steel knife blades in that set. Can you come up with a sharp answer, or might Bolitho just as well give up all hope of ever getting any service out of this piece corps?

Kay Artinian of Santa Monica is after an old-fashioned, hand-operated meat grinder that can be attached to a table; she claims that modern electric grinders chop the meat instead of grinding it, which is needed in Armenian cooking. Can you settle this beef before Artinian sees red, or will life in her kitchen simply grind to a halt because she can’t cut it any longer?

M. P. Powers of West Covina, who was looking for lighted house numbers, will be in the dark no longer. Golde of Long Beach writes that Site Lite International, 15595 Graham St., Huntington Beach, makes the item.

Another Southland source is Tollmark Corp. of Corona, (714) 735-9530; president Marta Tollerup says all her lighted house numbers are custom-made and come in a variety of colors. Dave “The Birdman” Akey, (818) 336-6844, says he represents Sparkle Plenty of Chicago, which manufactures several models of lighted numbers ranging from $18 to $120; they operate from a doorbell-type transformer.

Also, Betty Acos, (818) 789-8711, says she makes house numbers with stained glass that can be lighted from behind by a bulb. Dr. Lillian Baker of Woodland Hills mentioned Malibu Low-Voltage Garden Lights.

And Ted Alison writes from Texas that the Alison Co. of Chicago makes NuGlow numbers; a call to (312) 449-2022 will provide the name of a nearby distributor.

Breathing Easy

Muriel Arnold of Pasadena, who needs an all-plastic mattress cover for her allergies, can breathe easy. Emma King of Manhattan Beach, Helen Sheeley of Temple City and Virginia Tarquinio of Chatsworth all report that these mattress covers can be found on Page 1041 of Sears’ spring catalogue.

Samantha Klatt, owner of Kelly & Co. in San Pedro, (213) 548-1977, writes that her firm custom-makes dust covers and might be able to help. Martha Zuska of Los Alamitos says Aller/Guard, 1121 S.W. Gage Blvd., Topeka, Kan. 66604-1760, makes dust-proof products for allergy sufferers; her allergist told her about them. A Los Angeles reader writes that mattress covers from Biotech Systems of Chicago, (800) 621-5545, solved all her allergy problems.

Also, Stephanie Sabar of West Los Angeles writes that Allergen-Proof Encasings Inc., 1450 E. 363rd St., Eastlake, Ohio 44094, phone (216) 946-6700, would be a good source. And Ruth Vibber of Monterey Park and Alice Pierret of Santa Barbara told us about a mail-order source: Harriet Carter, Department 28, North Wales, Pa. 19455.

Pacific Coast Highway, Laguna Beach, and Rena Smith told us about the Beadery, 31761 Camino Capistrano in San Juan Capistrano.

Corrine Brawley listed Beads Beads, 849 Tustin Ave., Orange. In the San Diego area, C. R. Leigh praises Bovis Bead Co., 652 5th Ave., San Diego, and Beads ‘n Jewels, 455 C St., Chula Vista.
