Santa Monica : Lawyer to Review Horse Center

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education will ask its attorney to review a controversial proposal to build a $1.2-million equestrian center in Malibu.
The district owns the 20-acre parcel of land near Point Dume where the center would be built and leases it to Los Angeles County. The county has been trying for several years to develop the area into an equestrian center.
Conflicting interests of homeowners and horse owners, however, have stalled the project. Homeowners argue that the lighting, noise and odor the center would generate would lower their quality of life and property values. Horse owners, however, want a recreational area in which to ride their animals.
Board members heard the concerns of 27 people representing various rider and homeowners groups for more than two hours at Monday’s meeting. They also reviewed a consultant’s report on the center.
