Zoning Ordinance Approved

Share

Santa Monica’s new comprehensive zoning ordinance was given final approval by the City Council Tuesday night with a 5-0 vote. Council members Herb Katz and Christine Reed were absent.

The ordinance, which will take effect Sept. 8, is considered a victory for slow-growth advocates because it downzones much of the city by limiting the heights, sizes and uses of most buildings in Santa Monica.

The measure, given preliminary approval by the council July 27, is expected to cut new construction by an average of 30% in many areas of the city.

A revised, interim map of the city showing the location of 21 zoning districts was also approved by the council. A final districting map should be ready in about a year.
