It’s Time to Don Your Sun Day Best: Weekend Will Be Pleasant, Warm

The weekend-perfect weather in San Diego County will continue, forecasters say, to the delight of beachgoers, bicyclists, boaters and anyone else intent on outdoor activities.

Sunny skies will persist, with temperatures gradually increasing a couple degrees each day through Sunday, and morning low clouds will burn off earlier than they have been over the past few months, according to National Weather Service forecaster Wilbur Shigehara.

Throwback to June Humidity

So far, temperatures and humidity for August have been reminiscent of those of early June--about 75 degrees with 60% humidity, cooler and cloudier than usual for this time of year. Average temperatures for early August range in the upper 70s with humidity at 66%, Shigehara said.

But by this weekend, the weather should fall into its usual August pattern--warm and muggy. Shigehara said the change to seasonal weather this weekend is because of the weakening of low pressure over the West Coast, which had been pumping dry, cool winds into San Diego.

The pressure will weaken through Sunday, and slowly, high pressure from the east will build over the county, increasing temperatures.

“Not only is the weather warming to seasonal temperatures,” Shigehara said. “We are coming into the hurricane season--late August to early September--which could bring moisture into San Diego from the south.

“Right now, we’ve had a variation in the forecast: A high level wind shift from the south is allowing some moisture to flow in from Mexico. This will slightly increase the humidity and smog. Days will be somewhat hazy.”

Clouds Will Be Low, Surf Will Be Small

Beach areas will have a few morning low clouds through the weekend, disappearing by mid-morning. The highs will reach 70 to 75 degrees today, climbing 2 or 3 degrees Saturday and Sunday. Surf is moderately small--2 to 3 feet, with ocean temperature at 68.

The coastal strip and inland valleys are expected to be fair through Sunday, including night and mid-morning low clouds. Coastal highs will range from 75 to 79 today, increasing 2 or 3 degrees Saturday and Sunday. Overnight lows will fall between 62 and 67.

Inland valley temperatures will reach highs of 79-87, also increasing several degrees by Sunday, with lows of 60 to 66.

Humidity is expected to increase in the mountains and deserts through Sunday, but skies should remain clear in the afternoon. Mountain highs will reach 77 to 84, increasing 2 to 3 degrees through Sunday, with overnight lows 40 to 50 degrees.

Deserts call for highs ranging from 104 to 108 today, climbing 3 to 4 degrees through Sunday. Overnight lows will fall to between 70 and 78.
