Woodforde Defeats Lundgren; Connors, McEnroe, Lendl Win

Australian Mark Woodforde won 12 straight games Thursday to defeat 15th-seeded Peter Lundgren of Sweden in the third round of the $815,000 Player’s International tennis tournament.

Woodforde, who upset second-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden Wednesday, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-0 victory in a match delayed 76 minutes by a thunderstorm at the National Tennis Centre at York University.

Jimmy Connors, the No. 4-seeded player, breezed to his second consecutive easy victory, beating Switzerland’s Jakob Hlasek, 6-1, 6-4, in another rain-delayed match.

Connors will meet No. 5-seeded Pat Cash of Australia, the 1987 Wimbledon champion, who routed Sammy Giammalva, 6-2, 6-2.

Another Australian, John Frawley, ousted seventh-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

Eighth-seeded John McEnroe continued to impress with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Derrick Rostagno, and top-seeded Ivan Lendl beat 16th-seeded Jay Berger, 6-3, 6-0.

In other third-round matches, sixth-seeded Tim Mayotte edged Tim Wilkison, 7-6, 5-7, 7-6, and No. 14-seeded Kevin Curren ousted Dan Cassidy, 6-1, 6-2.
