The Sockers’ Branko Segota, who has been traveling throughout Europe for most of the summer, returned to San Diego Wednesday and met with Socker President Ron Cady.

Cady said he explained the details of this summer’s turmoil surrounding the Major Indoor Soccer League and said that Segota seemed receptive to the idea of playing again for the Sockers next season.

Segota will be playing for the Toronto Blizzard outdoor team for the next two months before he comes back to San Diego. At that time, Cady said, contract talks concerning next season will begin.

Cady also said the Sockers have paid their $400,000 letter of credit to the MISL for next season. Today is the deadline for the league’s seven teams to pay.

YACHTING

Members of the Stars & Stripes manufacturing crew began work Wednesday on a newly arrived 104-foot wing-sail mast. By Sunday afternoon, the crew intends to have the mast ready for a trial run on one of the two catamarans owned by the U.S. entry in the America’s Cup.

The New Zealand entry for the America’s Cup announced that it has acquired a 35-foot catamaran for its training for the races, which begin Sept. 7. The boat is 25 feet shorter than the two Stars & Stripes catamarans.

FOOTBALL

Thane Fisher, a junior fullback who left San Diego State after his freshman season, has rejoined the team as a walk-on. Fisher played sparingly as a blocking back during the Aztecs’ 1986 Western Athletic Conference championship season, but he lost his scholarship when he left the team after spring practice in 1987 because of a neck injury.
