The biggest night of the season for Sportsman division drivers takes place tonight at Saugus Speedway with the running of the Winston 100, a 33-mile double-points race with a purse of $13,320.

The winner drives off with $1,200 and 52 points. The favorite is defending track champion and points leader Dave Phipps of Simi Valley. Phipps, who has a division-high four wins, has won consecutive main events and has all but clinched an unprecedented third Sportsman title.

Phipps and other Saugus regulars also should be up against fresh competition.

“We should be getting cars from El Cajon and Ascot and other places,” Saugus promoter Ray Wilkings said. “Last year we did pretty well. We had about 48 race cars. I think it will be one of our biggest nights of the year.”

A 20-lap Mini-Stocks main event also is scheduled as well as the fourth figure 8 train race of the season and Saugus’ annual truckers’ night.

Gates open at 11 a.m. and practice sessions run until 4 p.m. Racing begins at 7 p.m.
