Shark Bites Surfer; Shore Watch Begins
A great white shark attacked a surfer near the mouth of the Klamath River, and park rangers started a “shark patrol” after a fisherman saw another great white 200 yards off a popular beach.
Carl Lafazio, 27, said after the shark bit him once, it came back for another assault but failed when Lafazio made it to shore with the help of four friends. “He grabbed me, sucked me under water, and then let me go,” Lafazio said of Thursday’s attack.
The bite to Lafazio’s right thigh required 27 stitches at Sutter Coast Hospital, where he was reported in stable condition.
Meanwhile, officials at Marin County’s Stinson Beach said they are taking seriously a fisherman’s reported sighting of a great white shark just 200 yards offshore.
