Sandy Alomar Jr. Has Surgery, Out 1-2 Months
Sandy Alomar Jr., a catcher who is considered the Padres’ top minor league prospect and one of baseball’s most prized young trade commodities, underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in San Diego Sunday and will be disabled “one to two months,” according to Dr. Paul Hirshman, a Padre team doctor.
The surgery repaired a cartilage tear in his left knee, that Alomar suffered during a collision at home plate Tuesday in Pacific Coast League game between Alomar’s Las Vegas Stars and Albuquerque. Alomar collided with Dodger prospect Juan Bell, according to Padre minor league director Tom Romenesko.
The Padres’ ability to fill the remaining holes on their team--outfielder, power hitter--is largely based upon the marketability of Alomar, who is considered the second-best catcher in the organization behind Benito Santiago, last year’s rookie of the year.
“We don’t think this will hurt him--every catcher has had some surgery like this,” Padre Manager Jack McKeon said.
