Robert Altman, director of “Nashville,” “MASH” and “Fool for Love,” will receive the Virginia Festival of American Film’s first distinguished film maker award at the festival scheduled Oct. 27 through Oct. 30.

Altman will discuss his film-making experiences in a seminar entitled, “A Director’s Retrospective,” including his most recent project, HBO’s “Tanner ’88.” The Virginia film festival is the only festival entirely devoted to the unique personality of American film.

The program, to be held at the University of Virginia, will screen 59 films, including premieres and historic films. Seminars and panel discussions will be held by film industry leaders on: “The Black Experience in Film,” “Women in Film,” “Screenplay As Adaptation,” “The Producer as Creator,” “The Documentary: Fact and Fiction,” “Matinee Theater,” and “Movie Stars On Television.” The three recipients of the Governor’s $1,000 Screenplay Award will be announced.
