A man freed by rescue crews from the wreckage of his car in Long Beach ran from the freeway accident, was hit by a car in the opposite lanes and was critically injured, the California Highway Patrol said Wednesday.

Firefighters found the unidentified man at 11:10 p.m. Tuesday, trapped in his car after an accident involving four cars on the San Gabriel River Freeway, CHP Officer Richard Perez said.

“As the firefighters were trying to remove him from the car, he was banging his head against the windshield,” Perez said.

The man, who did not appear to be injured in the accident, hopped out of his car and ran across the freeway, Perez said. He was struck by a car in the southbound lanes after he jumped the center divider and “tried to play dodge with oncoming traffic,” Perez said.

The man was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital, where he was placed on life-support systems, Perez said.
