Tennis Roundup : Ailing Cash Upset by Muller
Fourth-seeded Pat Cash was upset Wednesday by Gary Muller of South Africa, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6, in the second round of the Association of Tennis Professionals Championship at Jack Nicklaus Sports Center in Mason, Ohio.
Muller, ranked 173rd in the world, registered perhaps the biggest victory of his career in beating Cash, who showed limited mobility in the last two sets as he nursed an ailing Achilles’ tendon.
Top-seeded Stefan Edberg, No. 2 Mats Wilander and No. 3 Jimmy Connors advanced in straight sets.
Michael Chang of Placentia downed Peter Lundgren of Sweden, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Top-seeded Andre Agassi defeated Libor Pimek of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of the $125,000 Mennen Cup tennis championships at Livingston, N.J.
Seventh-seeded Zina Garrison, ninth-seeded Zina Garrison, and 10th-seeded Barbara Potter advanced to the third round of the Player’s Challenge at Montreal before rain postponed four matches.
