A San Diego police officer shot and wounded a man believed to be a drug dealer early Friday.

According to San Diego police Lt. Nancy Goodrich, the officer shot Jesse Tyree when Tyree, who was sitting in a car, dropped his hands as the officer approached.

The officer observed Tyree and a female companion identified as Sammie Scott get into a car believed to be owned by a local drug dealer, Goodrich said. The officer approached the vehicle in the 2700 block of Midway Drive and told the two occupants to hold their hands above their heads. Goodrich said Tyree dropped his hands, and the officer responded by firing three shots into the car.

Tyree sped off, with the officer in pursuit, and was involved in a collision near Kemper Street, according to a police spokesman.

Police found Tyree hiding under a picnic table on the grounds of the Adult Education Center in the 3500 block of Midway Drive, the spokesman said.

He was taken to Sharp Cabrillo Hospital, but was later transferred to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition late Friday.

Scott was treated and released at Physicians & Surgeons Hospital for injuries caused by glass fragments. She was taken to police headquarters for questioning and released.

Goodrich refused to name the officer involved in the shooting.
