Guy Lafleur Will Get a Tryout With Rangers
Guy Lafleur, who led the Montreal Canadiens to four consecutive Stanley Cup championships from 1976 to 1979, will get a tryout with the New York Rangers, the club said Friday.
“We have no contract with him, and will decide on the future depending on his success at training camp,” Ranger General Manager Phil Esposito said.
The 36-year-old right wing, who retired in 1984, also sought a tryout with the Kings, Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins.
On Tuesday, King General Manager Rogie Vachon rejected Lafleur’s request for a tryout, saying that the Kings would be unable to reach an agreement that would be in Lafleur’s best interests.
At that time, Lafleur’s agent, Yves Tremblay, indicated Lafleur would not go to camp without a contract. Tremblay also said Lafleur plans to play two more years.
Lafleur was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame earlier this year.
