Share

Former El Segundo Police Chief Raymond W. Lewis has been granted a stress-related retirement. Four months ago he was demoted to captain after officers complained about his management methods.

Lewis, 41, will receive his full salary for up to two months, when the Public Employees Retirement System is expected to determine his pension amount.

Police captains in El Segundo earn up to $68,276 a year. City officials declined to give Lewis’ salary.

City Manager Fred Sorsabal would not comment on the retirement. Lewis, an 18-year Police Department veteran, could not be reached.

Lewis served as chief from August, 1986 until March, 1988, when he was demoted to captain after complaints that he gave unfair evaluations and favored some officers.

Lewis denied those accusations and filed a lawsuit in federal court, alleging that city officials conspired to demote him. The action asks for $325,000 in damages.
