Australia and New Zealand have signed further agreements to link them in a single trading market by July, 1990.

“We are looking to a time when there will be no obstacles to the flow of trade and investment between Australia and New Zealand,” said New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange, who went to Canberra, Australia, for the signing.

The agreements signed by Lange and his Australian counterpart, Bob Hawke, ban the dumping of subsidized goods and align import regulations and quarantine procedures. They come under a 1983 treaty to free all trade between the two countries.

New Zealand is Australia’s third-largest export market. Australia in 1987 exported $2.1 billion ($1.6 billion U.S.) worth of goods to New Zealand, which in turn exported goods valued at $1.5 billion ($1.2 billion U.S.) to Australia.
