The team of Paul Azinger and Bob Tway combined for a 10-under-par 62 to take a one-shot lead halfway through the $650,000 Fred Meyer Challenge on the 6,584-yard Portland Golf Club course at Portland, Ore.

Trailing by one stroke was the team of Andy Bean and Ray Floyd in the 36-hole, best-ball tournament, which counts the better of the players’ scores on each hole.

“Early on, it was all Bob Tway,” said Azinger, who birdied the eighth hole to help his team for the first time. “I like having a partner who birdies five of the first seven holes.”
