A 16-year-old boy was killed Monday, and his brother was injured, after they were hit by a pickup truck while they were bicycling in Oceanside.
The dead youth, identified as Jacob Ibbottson of Palmdale by Deputy Coroner Charles Kelly, died at Tri-City Hospital about 1:45 p.m.
Jacob and his brother, Ryan, 12, were riding west on the paved shoulder of Oceanside Boulevard shortly after 1 p.m. when they were struck from behind by a pickup truck, Oceanside police spokesman Bob George said.
The driver of the pickup truck, William Sims, 20, a Marine lance corporal, was westbound on the street. He told police he had bent down to do something to his radio, then ran off the roadway, George said.
The boys reportedly were visiting their mother in Vista. The parents asked hospital officials not to release any information on Ryan’s condition.
George said Oceanside police are seeking charges of manslaughter against Sims.
