A San Diego man remained in serious condition at Scripps Memorial Hospital-La Jolla Wednesday with injuries suffered when he was impaled on a fence in a fall from the cross atop Mount Soledad.

Brian Pugh, 29, was climbing down from the cross shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday when he fell about 10 feet. He was impaled on two of the spikes that protrude from a wrought-iron fence surrounding the distinctive war monument in La Jolla, according to San Diego police and fire authorities. The spikes pierced his upper thigh, groin and buttocks, officials said.

A San Diego police spokesman said that Pugh had been drinking.

It took firefighters a little more than half an hour to cut the bars before freeing Pugh, who was in considerable pain, a Fire Department spokesman said. Pugh was taken to Scripps by Life Flight helicopter at 9:36 p.m.
