Share

The Coast Guard and Navy scaled down their search Wednesday for a missing fishing boat that left San Pedro with four people aboard, authorities said.

Efforts to locate the 55-foot Mission Belle will continue until all chances of finding the crew have been exhausted, Petty Officer Leo Kay said.

Four planes focused the search Wednesday on a 24,000-square-mile area between Monterey and waters 150 miles south of the Oregon state line.

The Mission Belle was due back at its home port in San Pedro on Aug. 17.

Among the four people reported aboard the vessel were the skipper, Vito Russo, 35, of San Pedro; his 13-year-old son, Jason; a man identified only as Stacy Sabal, and a third man whose name was not available. Authorities began the search Monday. The vessel has not been heard from since Aug. 7.
