Bethlehem Steel Corp. has signed a letter of intent to sell its Panther Valley anthracite division, getting the steelmaker out of the business of mining hard coal. The sale will not affect Bethlehem Steel’s bituminous coal mining operations in western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky. The company intends to sell the Panther Valley division, headquartered in Tamaqua, Pa., to a group of investors headed by Pottsville, Pa., lawyer James Curran. The sale price was not disclosed.
