Local News in Brief : Oil Initiatives Get Ballot Designations

Share

The competing Los Angeles city initiatives dealing with the battle by Occidental Petroleum Corp. to drill for oil in Pacific Palisades have received their ballot designations from the county registrar-recorder.

Proposition O will be the initiative sponsored by Councilmen Zev Yaroslavsky and Marvin Braude that would repeal three 1985 ordinances granting Occidental the right to drill two exploratory core holes on the landward side of Pacific Coast Highway.

Proposition P will go on the ballot as the measure to conserve Occidental’s authority to drill the core holes as well as pave the way for production should the exploration prove successful.

A campaign spokeswoman for the anti-drilling initiative quipped that it should be easy for voters to remember the designations on the crowded November ballot: O and P are the first letters of Occidental Petroleum.
