CAMPAIGN ’88 : Bush Throws a Curve
Vice President George Bush, captain of the Yale baseball team four decades ago, took a break from the campaign Sunday afternoon to toss out the first pitch at Houston’s Astrodome, where his favorite team, the Houston Astros, met the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Bush chatted with Astros pitcher Nolan Ryan, manager Hal Lanier and coach Yogi Berra, then strode onto the field to the cheers of the crowd and threw a pitch that didn’t quite hit the strike zone.
“A little too much of a break,” Bush said.
After watching two innings with his wife, Barbara, Bush changed out of his Astros jacket and flew to Austin to attend a private memorial service for Price Daniel, a three-term Texas governor and U.S. senator who died Thursday.
