Troops shot and critically wounded a West Bank man who violated a curfew today when he left his house to meet an ambulance he called for his sick son, hospital officials and Arab witnesses said.

An army spokeswoman said she was checking the reported shooting of Bilal Shabi, 42, in Nablus. A neighbor said Shabi came to his house to use the phone early today to call an ambulance for his 10-year-old son, Kayed, who was suffering a lung infection. “Then he went down to wait for the ambulance, so the driver wouldn’t get lost,” the neighbor told the Associated Press. Shabi was the fourth Nablus resident to be shot for leaving his home during the curfew, which was imposed Thursday.
