Local News in Brief : Costa Mesa : Segerstrom Loses Bid to Block Referendums

Share

A Superior Court judge Monday rejected efforts by developer C.J. Segerstrom & Sons to block two referendums on the proposed Home Ranch office and commercial complex in Costa Mesa.

Judge Tully Seymour ruled that petitions seeking the November votes were not sufficiently flawed to justify invalidation. Attorneys for the developer had argued that the petitions did not contain enough information to enable signers to make an informed decision. In addition, they said that signers should have been required to list home addresses.

Opponents of the $400-million project, which would include office towers and commercial space, praised the judge’s decision.

“The people will have a chance to vote on this project finally,” said Jay Humphrey, spokesman for Costa Mesa Citizens for Responsible Growth.

Attorneys for Segerstrom could not be reached for comment Monday night.

Opponents hope to block the 94-acre development with two ballot questions. The first measure would ask whether the Costa Mesa General Plan should be amended to allow a 3.1-million-square-foot office project to be built. The second question would allow a scaled-down, 2.2-million-square-foot plan, proposed in May by the developer and approved by the City Council.
