A sewer line near the Point Loma waste-water treatment plant was accidentally severed by a construction worker Monday morning, causing about 2,000 gallons of sludge to spill into the ocean, a San Diego County Health Services Department spokesman said.
The spill occurred about 700 yards north of the treatment plant, which is on Gatchell Road west of Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery. The sludge ran down a cliff and into the ocean, but the flow was stopped by early afternoon, County Health Services spokesman Lyn Wallace said.
The coast near the site is not accessible by land. Health officials are advising divers and fishermen to avoid the water on 100 yards of each side of the spill for at least 24 hours.
